the photography:
there was a small break in the gorgeous spring weather here in chicago. yesterday and on into this morning, fog blanketed the north side of the city making for some awesome pictures and some wonky traffic jams. only in chicago would drivers be distracted by low lying clouds.

to set the tone of just how creepy it was outside, i also took some indoor shots of our back stairs and of our kitchen. my wife and i love to watch the CTA workers do their nightly rounds which include walking down the tracks past our house. once they hit a specific spot, they turn around and walk back up to the platform in an awkward single file line. we always joke that it’s the ‘Others’ from the the TV show Lost. last night, we were so entrenched in the cinematic quality of the weather that we actually got spooked by the whole ordeal. thus no photos of people walking on the train tracks in the fog. we were too busy hugging each other and laughing… oh well…

with the baby on it’s way any day now (holy crap i don’t know if i can wait any longer!!!!!) my blog posts have slowed to a trickle. i will make sure to post as much as i possibly can… when fog like this rolls in, i can’t help myself. i also have a good 6 blog posts (or so) containing my-trip-to-china photos waiting to be published… photos are with the 5D and the 28mm f1.8. no tripods were used. everything here is handheld. i’m still like that. enjoy.

the music:
stellastarr* channel not only the great 80’s rock gods, flock of seagulls, duran duran, but also the 70’s new wave bands that bred them, blondie, the cars, the knack, etc..

this ode to the nose candy is one of the best radio hits that never made it on to anything but college radio. it should be a dance club favorite, it should be on everyone’s ipod, it should be the cornerstone for post 80’s revival that’s been brewing and overflowing for the last 10 years but alas… this band just never got high enough off the ground. me thinks they tried to be too much like rainer maria and not enough like the ting tings. sigh.

craptastic day in chicago

can i talk about how crappy the weather has been in chicago this spring? what have the weather gods given us this year? bupkus. nadda. zilch. nothing. where’s my 68 degree sunny day with a slight breeze? oh, sorry, the memo says that it has been replaced by rain, 43 degree mornings, and some serious wind. dag yo. i did get a chance to sneak out and walk around the block and document the crappy day. not always a fun subject, crappy days tend to end just as horribly as they begin. i think today will be different. the mrs. and i are headed to the gym, then back to the house for some lounging with the puppy. i think things will follow the natural course and we will see the sun soon, and with said sun comes our 86 degree days. i hope.

the music:
a crappy day outside deserves some serious ass kicking sludge. slint, from outta no where, in 1991, gave us one of the great indie records of all time. spiderland laid the ground work for anything and everything that was post-rock. oh boy is it good. the cover photo was shot by will oldham too which is totally sweet. anyways, you can google them and figure out what all the hub-bub is about. or you can just dive in.

shorn grass, hot day, cool dog.

after posting a facebook update that stated that i was about to mow the lawn, i was told by a dear friend from across the country that maybe i should be taking photos of said lawn instead. i took him up on his offer. so before i spent the rest of the day enjoying the friendly confines of the local horse track (it was derby day for crying out loud) but after i had mowed said lawn, i snapped off some shots of the faithful puppy (Monte Verde) hanging around on the deck. it was a glorious day indeed. the blossoms from the neighbor’s trees were blowing into our yard like soft floating summer snow. monte decided that he would roll around on top of an earth worm. yesterday morning proved that the world is at ease. forget about the M1H1 swine flu… summer has officially broke in chicago. things are gonna be alright.

the music:
things couldn’t get any more summer than listening to ska and/or reggae. this song was one of my favorite tunes in the summer of 1995 when i first listened to it. the lyrics are crass, the horn line is kicking, and the rhythm section is tight. exactly what i need when listening to american ska. ah… to be a youth again.
