Hi,

Exactly same for me as for Nathaniel : came here after a Google image search while seeking out pictures shot with this lens. I have a 50mm 1.4 and love it but quite often it’s just not wide enough sometimes. I'm convinced now.
And thanks for sharing!

marbles was the best (it'll never be spears to me). it was a longer bike ride from bean road but still a frequent spot.

and the East vs. West portion is an important distinction (they were separate towns for well over a hundred years). my stepdad lives on Lake Rd. and it feels weird to be on the other side now. the million dollar homes that keep popping up are an annoying distraction as well

I'm a little late to the party here, but I stumbled upon this post with a Google image search while seeking out pictures shot with this lens. I'm definitely sold on it now. I have the 50mm 1.4 and love it to death; but quite often it's just a little too telephoto, so I always have to keep my 18-135mm handy. I'd love to wander around with just a 28 and a 50 :)

Hey Andrew!
The second photo is in focus but that focus is not on the subject's face. At f1.8, all lens' create a very thin z-plane (x being vertical, y being horizontal, and z being your third dimension or depth) on which to focus. For example, when focusing on a subject's face at f1.8 you can focus on the middle of the nose and have the tip of the nose and the cheeks behind the nose drop out of focus quite quickly (depending how close you are to the subject). With the 28mm lens, the z-plane of focus is actually bowed slightly as there is a curved distortion that happens at that wide a lens so that the z-plane is not actually perpendicular to the lens the further you get away from center of the image. Does that make sense?

As far as the bokeh is concerned, the lens has very little to do with the background. The distraction you see stems from the background itself as the city streets of Chicago are quite busy. I tend to dodge and burn some of my backgrounds in photoshop to make them pop or disappear. This time I burned them slightly to make them distinct. Bokeh is defined not only by the quality of the glass but also by the length of lens. If you are looking for the most smooth bokeh, I suggest using a long zoom and if you are looking for the busiest or chunkiest bokeh, wide angle lens should suffice. A lot of it is in the physics of lens'.

I hope that helps you out!

And remember, if you are using this lens on a camera with a field of view crop factor (non-fullframe) you will get different results as the physics of the lens length will change according to the x# attached with your camera.

Cheers,
-Ian

Hi,

Actually, I have some questions if that's ok? The second shot doesn't seem to be in focus, is it just that this lens is soft at 1.8, or are you maybe focused on some point other than the models face? Its hard to tell, but maybe his jacket looks in focus?

Also, te bokeh from these street shots is very distracting, the OOF sections are very busy, is this typical of what you get with this lens, or was if just a bad day?

Thanks

Thanks Steve, it's been my go to lens for a while now. It's small and compact on the camera so I can take more discrete photos with my 5D. great for traveling.

These are great Ian and when you're on your photo journey for your new site, please keep an eye out for a fire-engine red 1969 Dodge Polara. Our grandpa and subsequently my parents had one (currently what my dreams are made of). So glad you're back. I used to check this every day.

I absolutely love the fact that at least one of the "Lo mein / Jim Beam's / keg tossing night" photos made it into here. I loved those cameras, that wall, and all these people. If I were you, I would stop regretting spending the money on film. This is an amazing collection of friends, memories, and smiles. Cheers.

oh these are great, I really loved being in Hong Kong, it was an interesting experience, with the heavy western influence where you almost forgot where you were for a minute, but then the heavy asian culture would hit you right in the face.

I really wish I had been into photography as I am now when I was there, but It was memorable.

i want that van. and i want the depot really bad. just like i want this DC landmark that has fallen into disuse: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Coliseum. imagine the possibilities of a non-corporate development approach to some of these landmarks? performance space, mixed use and mixed income housing, something positive for the community. something other than an aging landmark currently waging a losing battle with the sands of time.

This is the neighborhood we lived in for 6 years - great shots of the train station - it represents the city and her woes in many ways. We still know lots of people down there, for when you are ready to take the inside tour :) Nice work!

I have to say that my favorite is IMG_3249, the optical illusion just makes me smile. The post as a whole really impressed me with how you managed to just capture the work the models do without really just making it about the "girls".

That said, my eyes just keep going to that first picture, she really is just stunning and I hate to say that even if i could see the whole of the car, I still wouldn't be all that interested in it over her. One Question though; Is it a Volvo?

Wow, loving the horse photos!
I still remember the very minute of the very night that my friend brought the Operation Ivy "Energy" vinyl over and placed it on my turntable during a party in 1989. Life changing.

Hi Ian,
Funny you should comment on "Death in the Family" - nice comments, by the way. I had intended to let you know earlier that the family pics in the north west kingdom were very appealing. Keep taking those beautiful pics. I was especially attracted to your portraits of your grandfather.

I'm biased because I love these horses as much as Ian, but I have to say these are my favorite photos...in a long time. For christmas I get to pick two out to get printed (big!) and hang in our dining room. Nice work!

It's great to see this side of LA. My mom's side of the family are third generation angelenos, and this would have been the city that she and my grandparents, aunts and uncles grew up with. Also it reminds me of the theater district in Chicago, as well as stretches of Milwaukee avenue.

The pics make is look better than it was. A great photographer can make ANYTHING look good. He failed to mention the giant tongue video or the crap water pressure or the general feeling that the hotel was infinitely cooler than you (I) would ever be.

Ian, your review hits the nail on the head. When I stayed there last year, I loved the decor of the common spaces of the hotel. But the room felt "rode hard, put away wet." The minimalist design just highlighted its impracticality.

On the other hand, when I called down to room service after I had finally stopped throwing up last year, they really took care of me. I just asked for a tray with stuff for someone who'd been sick. They sent toast, oatmeal, sliced bananas, tea, and a flower.

Those pics make it look better than it was. He didn't mention the non-existent water pressure or giant tongue video or the general feeling that no matter what, you (I) would NEVER be hip enough to fit in. FAIL.

Amazing shots, though.

Ian- great job in making the mundane into art...honestly, you do a terrific job of focusing in the right places, angling it just so and capturing an aspect to make it look pretty amazing. I'm biased, I know, but I think this is a wonderful set of photographs.

Wow, she not only feels naked without her camera -- she looks it. I don't think I've ever seen her without her Canon! Awesome photos, love the detail. Looks like I need to pick up a 28mm. South Loop, FTW!

One thing when looking back on this, I realize I have more zittiers then I thought I did which makes me feel this weird odd confidence about being that way. Mmm, well thank you for taking them I really enjoyed being a part of this, glad we could learn and lesson each other up, you've got a friend in me! Can't wait to shoot it up and talk again.

hey emily! it was great to see the gang at the gallery. i have my calendar marked for next tuesday as the soonest get-together will not be taking place this tuesday.

as for your TECHY Question.
Q. What are you using to make the edges blurry?
A. Good old down home straight from the camera depth of field. The 28mm lens is fairly fast at f1.8 and with that gigantic f-stop comes that minimal z-axis focusing plane. i love the way it looks. someday, i'll plunk down for Canon's 50mm f1.2 or find a used version of their 50mm f1.0. that would be the cat's pajamas...

thanks for stopping by!

Hey Ian,
I confess that I have not read ALL your entries, but these pics and the accompanying photos kinda hit home! Techy question: what are you using to make the edges blurry? Your pics, titles and comments are lively, witty and sophisticated. It was good to see you Friday.

Definitely my 24-70mm f/2.8. i first used it with a 40D, but when i switched to fullframe, it totally brought me to life. So yeah, 24-70, my most used lens!

random thoughts

did you ever get to Lounge Ax before it was demolished?
have you read Anthony Bourdain's book "Nasty Bits" - if not, I believe you and Catherine would love it - it was the reason I went to Italy in May - I was reading it on a bus when my friend Becky texted me to say she was watching the Anthony Bourdain was hanging out with my friend Dario the butcher in Panzano . . . i thought it was an odd coincidence and checked flights to Italy which were $385 roundtrip to Florence - needless to say I booked a flight within 12 hours

have you ever listened to the following - Joseph Arthur (Kevin Burke led me to this one - Dear Lord - an addictive song) or The Beautiful South (old saint louis friend find)

I confess that I have never been to Hog Doug's - criminally negligent - yet true - there I have said it

Maybe it's just me, but I think I dig the 28mm more than the 50mm. Better scope for "Street" portraiture and with the f1.8, it's still faster and sexier than a clerk working the returns counter at Nordstrom.
