the photography:

Portrait #8 is daniel

i just returned from long island from a great visit with family. it was a tough visit for many reasons but i have never had more fun laughing, telling stories, and hanging out. daniel is my wife’s cousin. luckily my wife’s uncle is also a photographer so all of her cousins are used to people shoving a camera in their face. during the week, daniel introduced me to one of his friends who was on the tv show, “hell’s kitchen”. this chef then made us food. my lord, it was fantastic. i miss the east coast sometimes for it’s cheap thin crust pizza and it’s seafood. after spending one day at home in chicago, i am actually currently back in new york. but this time, instead of lounging in the hampton’s, i am holed up in a tiny hotel room in mid-town manhattan. it’s kind of exciting to be in nyc. this place is one of the most photogenic cities in the world. the people, the architecture, the social groups, and the diverse surroundings of new york make it a great place to click away. keep yourselves glued to the blog because after this week, i’ll have plenty to post. the middle photo of daniel is one of those weird shots that contains so much contrast that it almost doesn’t work. but the trees in the background give this photo an interesting balance of light and dark. the contrast is extreme but that’s what make it cool.

the music:
mogwai is a band that i need to be in the mood for. i love their music but shoegazing monotony can sound like rubbish if you are not in the mood to sit and enjoy. sometimes i need something more. but when i hop on a plane, mogwai is the perfect relaxer. i found out about this band when my friend happened to run into the band themselves on the street in boston. he went to their show and came back with a their first single. i have been a big fan and hooked on their music since that chance meeting.
